Are you excited just by the thought of getting a pet? We know the feeling! Four-legged friends bring joy, love and many mental and physical health benefits to our lives. Plus, they are adorable. 🥰
But… (yes, there is a ‘but’!) having a pet is also a big responsibility. And that’s why we’ve put together 6 questions to ask yourself that will help you figure out if you’re ready to be a pet parent.
1. Can I have a pet where I live? 🏡
Before taking a pet home, ask permission from your landlord and double check your rental agreement. Do they allow pets? And if they do, do they allow all kinds of pets? Some may have restrictions as to the type, breed or size of the pet.
The same applies for your flatmates, partner, parents or siblings. You’ll need to make sure that everyone in the house is on board before proceeding with adopting a pet, so that you won’t be asked to return it later.
2. Where will I be in a month, a year or in 5 years? 🧳
If all is good and pets are allowed where you live, do you think you’ll be staying there for a long time? Will your pet be a priority when it’s time to find a new apartment or study abroad? If the answer is no, then adopting a pet may not be a good idea.
3. Do I have the time needed to take care of a pet? ⏱
Your pet will always be there for you. And they’ll do that unconditionally! But what about you? Taking care of a pet means more than just filling their bowl once a day. Pets may need food and water multiple times a day. They may need walks, exercise, cuddles, playtime, cleaning, grooming and checkups at the vet once in a while. Do you have the time needed to keep your future pet healthy and happy?
4. Can I afford having a pet? 💰
Pets can also be costly! Think about the vaccines, microchip, neutering, toys and accessories you’ll have to pay for, and think about the food, grooming, litter, vet care, or other expenses that you’ll have to keep paying for over their lifetime. Estimate your upfront and monthly expenses depending on the type and size of the pet and make sure you can cover them before proceeding with adoption.
5. How will I deal with behavior and 💩 issues?
Well… There may be some pooping, or barking, or scratching in the house (probably pet hair too!). Things will not be perfect, especially in the beginning. Will this be a deal-breaker for you, making you want to get rid of the little ‘monster’ you brought home? Or will you be willing and patient enough to provide the necessary training to your pet?
6. Why do I want a pet? 🤔
Is it because your kids asked for it? To gift it to a friend? To keep you company in quarantine? Just because they are cute? Or maybe you like the idea of coming home to a pet that is excited to see you after a long working day?
In case you answered yes to any of the above, then think again. Pets are not disposable toys, gifts or accessories. Pets are family! And they should be treated as such.
If you’ve answered all of the above questions honestly and you’re 100% sure that you’re able to commit and take care of a pet for their whole lifetime, then congratulations! On our Adopt page, you can find pets that are available for adoption and start looking for your new family member right away.
If you don’t feel ready, don’t worry. It may just not be the right time. Until then, why not consider volunteering, fostering or donating, to help animals in need and familiarize yourself with pet parenthood? 💛
